  • Dad's Knee Replacement Surgery

My dad went through full knee replacement surgery in Nagpur. Rehab is a long process, and I am sure the painkillers are helping, but so far, he is doing well and is able to walk without pain. I am very impressed with the quality of doctor and the process he went through. Everything required was available in one private hospital and the cost is very reasonable. The out-of-pocket expenses for one knee replacement turned out to be around 2 Lakhs (~$2,500). Given my dad served in military, the whole cost was absorbed by Indian government military insurance.

Out of curiosity, I inquired about what would it cost to do this process without insurance in USA. Turns out to be around ~70K and that’s excluding rehab. No wonder medical tourism is so popular and will continue to be.

If anyone is into gritty police procedurals, I highly recommend TV series ‘Bosch’ and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’.

Long time ago, I picked up one of his books at a random roadside bookstall near Churchgate (Mumbai) and became an obsessive follower from there.

Met him for the first time 13 years ago during a signing event in Princeton. Totally dream come true moment (wish I had better camera back then).

Very glad for all the success he received over the years.

  • They Cloned Tyrone, 2023 - ★★★★★

The problem with so many originals by Netflix, most of which are crappy, is that gems like 'They Cloned Tyrone' get hidden in the trash.
This Get-Out-esque thriller/comedy/SciFi/satire is an excellent masterpiece which would need multiple watches to figure out everything going on in the movie.
The performances by lead trios (especially Jamie Foxx), sharp dialogue and the general vibe of the movie is excellent.
I hope more people watch it and Netflix continues to give chance to movies like these.
    Highly recommended.
P.S. -- If you do like this movie, next one on your list should be 'Sorry To Bother You'.

  • Oppenheimer, 2023 - ★★½

Unpopular Opinion but I found Oppenheimer boring or rather very underwhelming.

Pros -- The movie is great in technical and acting departments. With so much talent involved, it's hard to screw up these two areas.
In addition to Cillian Murphy, chef's kiss performance of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.

However, the movie itself had cut after cut after cut scenes. It was as if the movie was trying to cover all bullet points from Wikipedia page of the namesake.
It's disorienting and it's really hard to keep track of revolving characters.
You meet a person and 10 seconds later, you are getting intimate. No character development at all.

If I didn't have enough background about this subject (Veritasium's Youtube video was excellent in this regard), I would have been really lost.

    The big explosion was...underwhelming...

There are several key moments in this historical non-fiction which are on screen but if you blink, you miss it.

All that being said, even if you know all about the underlying subject, it's always good to see it visually.

That being the notion, I wish this movie didn't have the unnecessary full frontal nudity. It didn't add anything to the plot line.

If not for 'R' rating, I would have taken my young daughters to the theater.

Damn, what a disappointment. I was so excited to see this movie for so long.

  • Hulu and Disney+ (Password mystery solved)

Let’s start with the set up:-

    1. Long time ago, I created a Spotify account and as a perk, got Hulu as an add-in service. I created an account on Hulu and have been watching lot of Hulu originals and FX shows (fabulous network).
    2. I also have standalone Disney+ (I have young kids, so have to have it). Bit jaded on Marvel shows/movies but we love to watch Pixar movies on loop.

Since last few months, every day or two, my account locks out on both these services and I have to ‘Reset Password’ on both services to login again.

This is a laborious process (especially on Apple TV) and it’s frustrating to do this almost every day…twice.

I am the ‘tech guy’ in the house so the eye-roll and yell-from-living-room I get from all my family members was so annoying.

I tried various obvious ways to resolve this problem (like Uninstall/Reinstall apps, Reset Apple TV, Log Out of all devices, use Smart TV apps etc.) but in vain. Without fail, every couple of days, back to ‘Reset Password’ on both these apps.

After breaking my brain and trying everything, I found out that following was the problem:-

    1. Disney+, in all it’s wisdom, somehow has integrated Hulu in the backend i.e. THEY SHARE THE PASSWORD. WTF.
    2. I changed password on Disney+ and that same password works on Hulu.
    3. Changing password on one service changes it on both services, and both log you out of all devices.
    4. I did not get Hulu through Disney+ bundle/package. I signed up for both of these services separately but somehow they are syncing passwords.

If anyone else is having this issue, then modify the password on Disney+ and use that same password on Hulu. That will resolve the problem.

Hope this post of mine turns up in search results for anyone else losing their mind over this problem.

Given that I come from a very small town in central India, it’s astonishing how many of my childhood friends now live in USA. We went to same school, played and grew up together. Around 10 of us got together (some flew, some drove) for a long weekend break and rented a big house in Poconos. Lot of food and alcohol was consumed over late night chats. Really had a great time and we were almost in tears when departing.

It’s very hard to make new friends, especially very close ones, as an adult. I am glad and fortuate to have such friends with whom I can be unfiltered.

Cherish your close friends and keep them close. Here is hoping that we meet again in couple of years.

  • Using Public Library and Libby

Borrowing books on Libby is a good idea and I am happy that this model exists. However, somehow, most of the time, I am unable to take advantage of it.

It’s good for quick reads and I have used it few times for some Grisham type authors.

I usually like to read big immersive fiction books (King, Sanderson) though and I am never able to finish a book in a given time period. Any further renewal hits roadblock as other people are in the queue.

If I like the book enough, I just buy it on Kindle (or paperback) but otherwise, what I do is:-

    1. Place hold on hard copy and Libby e-book at same time.
    2. Usually hard copy arrives pretty quickly. Yay NJ library network. Libby, however, takes long time, especially for popular books, but I do get it eventually.
    3. Keep switching between these two formats till I finish the book.

P.S. – Currently using this model on ‘Fairy Tale’ by Stephen King.
